Hapamanda Money Savers Series: MAC 187 Stipple Alternative (ELF & Beauty...

Why pay more???

I'm always on the hunt for cheaper beauty items and cosmetics. Living in a world full of MAC, Sephora, Urban Decay and Smashbox money makers we really need to have some money savers for those of us that don't want to sell our children or our right leg for a Stipple Brush :)

In this video I show you a couple of different alternatives to the MAC 187 Duo Fiber Brush, which retails from $40-$50 *GULP*. While the 187 is a fantastic, soft and dense brush, I'm not convinced it is worth the money. Now, I'm no "Brand Snob". I don't want just the name brand things. I want what works and what will get me my money's worth. I definitely think there are some items that warrant the extra money, but not just because of their brand name, but because they are a great product in general.

In the case of this MAC 187 brush I think that ELF's Stipple Brush for $3 is more than comparable! It is a bit less dense and not as soft, but other than that it does the exact same thing for your foundation application and the exact opposite thing to your wallet :)  The other pro to the ELF brush is that you can buy multiples so that you don't have to rely on your 1 MAC brush to use every day and have to wash it every night. I keep about 4 ELF Stipple brushes on hand at all times and wash them on the weekends. The ELF Stipple Brush also has many more uses that the MAC 187 does (IMO). It is smaller, therefore, it is easier to apply blush and to contour your face (and you know how I love to contour!!).

The other option that is in between the MAC and ELF is the Beauty Blender Sponge, which retails from $10-$17 depending on where you get it. I got mine on Amazon for 2 for $20. Now this is not a stipple brush, but I feel that it applies your foundation amazingly well. No streaks, no blotchy spots and no fuss. It's much easier to clean that a brush and this is what I have been using every day for my foundation because I am absolutely in LOVE with it! So, all in all, I don't think you need to spend the $50 for the MAC brush. I would buy 15 ELF stipple brushes or 5 beauty blenders instead (LOL). Don't be fooled into buying products just for their name brands. Do your research, watch youtube reviews and find out more info. Save your money for the items that really deserve the extra money (like the Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette or the NAKED Palette). But not on a brush.

Beauty Blender Tutorial & Review

This is my new favorite find!! Not only can you apply foundation, but you can also contour and apply blush for a flawless finish! Let me know what you guys think. I'm going to try out some other ones because this one is kinda pricey at $10 each. I'll see if I can find something that works just as good but is a little easier on your pocket :)

Total Bummer: ELF Lash & Brow Set

 

ELF 3 Piece Lash & Brow Set....


I have been looking all over the place for a cool little eyelash curler like this one and I knew that I loved the ELF tweezers, so I thought this was going to be a great purchase!! For $3, what could I lose?? Well, first off, the moment I opened it up the eyelash curler fell apart (literally). All the screws came out and it fell to pieces. Then, the eyebrow gel stopper came out so there was nothing to keep all of the product from coming out onto the brush! The tweezers were ok, but I was so super bummed. This is actually the first thing I have ever bought from ELF that I have been super disappointed in.

I decided to give ELF the benefit of the doubt and called customer service to send me a new one. The same thing happened!!! Don't make the same mistake I did. It's not worth it. I think ELF definitely needs to work on redesigning this product because I think it has a lot of potential.

UPDATE: It appears that ELF has pulled this item from their website, but I'm not sure if they are redesigning it or just trashing the idea...will keep you posted!

On Vacation!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to write and say hello because I miss you :)

I am on a vaca in Kauai right now visiting friends with my husband!! We are having a fabulous time and will be back later this week. I will be getting on top of all my giveaways and more YT videos! I also have some more awesome beauty blog info to share, so stay tuned for that too!!!

Remembering 9/11/01

I remember like it was yesterday exactly where I was when I heard about the 9/11 attacks. My alarm went off in bed in my San Diego apartment at 5:45am (Good ol' Howard Stern). The only thing I heard was him saying to turn on the TV's because the world trade center had been hit with something. I shot up out of bed and turned on my TV in the living room. I had to get ready for my 8am class at school so I took a shower and I remember when I came out to look at the TV again I saw with my own eyes the second plane hit the second tower! I couldn't believe it. I just started crying, as I knew what that meant for so many people on that plane and in those buildings. I fell to my knees. I felt so helpless...

I ended up going to school and I was so shocked that my first professor didn't even say anything about the attacks and went on as usual. My second class instructor was freaking out and told us she had to leave because she was from New York and she doesn't know if her family is ok. At that point our school SDSU was evacuated and all classes were canceled because the threat of the attacks was spreading to the west coast. After scrambling out of school and waiting almost an hour to get out of the parking lot, I raced home and glued myself to the TV again. I stayed put on my couch through the entire night and into the next day...crying, sobbing, wondering and feeling so hopeless. My worst fear is losing someone I love, so I couldn't imagine what all those people in New York were feeling that day and every day since then...

10 years later, it still feels like yesterday and I can remember every second of it. I have been watching the news with my 3 1/2 year old daughter trying to show her what happened. To her, it's just a part of history and she won't ever know what it was like to be there. So many lives were affected and I still have such a hard time with the guilt I feel for not being able to do much from where I was/am...

I will never forget that day and today on this 10th anniversary, I am so proud to be an American and am so thankful for all the men and women who serve our country with pride and love. My heart goes out to all the family and friends of those who lost their lives in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. You will never be forgotten.

I hold my family closer today because of you...
I live my life more fully because of you....
I love with my heart more open because of you...

Today I live in the memory of all the victims of 9/11.

ELF Clutch Palette: Vintage Pink

So, I picked up 2 of these clutch palettes the last time I placed an order with ELF and I just had to keep one for myself (sorry gals!). It is the perfect travel piece for my upcoming trip to Kauai. It has everything from eyeshadows, eyebrow setting, blush, bronzer and lips! What more could you ask for? Not to mention the colors are borderline amazing!

             
It has just the right amount of colors in each tone so you can pretty much wear any color you want. Today I wanted to do a vintage inspired look with the bottom row of the pinks and the grays along the right side to add a smokey look (as always). I even used the highlight in the top left corner and it worked ok. I have other favorite highlights that I prefer more, but this will work during my vacation :) It also comes with a face shimmer next to the blush that has a very soft and creamy glow to add to your cheekbones or wherever else you want to add a little luminance. The eyebrow settings are perfect for any skin type and the lip colors are surprisingly pretty too! I used the peachy one (2nd from the left). All in all, I am excited to try out some more looks!

Wedding Dress Up & Memories....

The other day, my sister and I went over to my Mom's house for a play date with our kids and it turned out to be an adult dress up day!!! My mom has been storing all of our wedding dresses at her house and we decided to bring them out to show our girls (but mostly to see if they still fit :p lol )

First, I tried on my Mom's wedding dress from over 40 years ago!!! Now IMO, this is the most AWESOME dress I have ever seen. Total 70's inspired with wide legged LINEN PANTS under a beautiful sheer wrap. Embroidered white flowers across the chest and long flowy sleeves really made it just the ultimate wedding dress and I could just feel the love and laughter from that one day that she and my Father once shared.

Here I am wearing the exact same dress 41 years later!

                      

Now is that the coolest dress EVER? I totally loved playing dress up in my Mom's wedding dress <3

Here is my sister in her wedding dress from 2000 and 3 kids later!!!!...fits like a glove :)

Now here is my wedding dress....4 years and 2 kids later...it still fits :p

Oh what fun to reminisce about all the happy times in our life. 

I think we should all take more time to do this :)
